SHPEP’s founding partner and core funder, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF), is shifting their strategic priorities, and will end their funding of our work at the conclusion of our 2026 summer cohort. The decision is not a reflection on our program’s performance, and RWJF remains committed to making health systems more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. The American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC), the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), and RWJF proudly recognize the vast impact SHPEP has made over the past 37 years in supporting tens of thousands of future health professionals. The AAMC and ADEA are exploring the future of this program and how we may continue our mission in new ways. We will share updates in the coming year. To read more about these changes or to access the frequently asked questions, please visit our FAQs. The 2026 application cycle for the Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) and the Minority Serving Institution Pathway Initiative (MSIPI) is now open. All materials — including one letter of recommendation and official transcript(s) — must be postmarked or time-stamped by the submission deadline. Please allow up to 10 business days for processing once materials are received. The submission deadline for this year's application is February 5, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.

The Rubens J. Pamies, MD, Opportunity Fund Scholarship Application opens Monday, April 3, 2023.

The SHPEP National Alumni Advisory Board established the scholarship in memory of the late Dr. Pamies who was deeply committed to eradicating health disparities. He served as a mentor and role model for many who participated in the program, and his tireless efforts helped to widen the pipeline for underrepresented minorities seeking to enter healthcare professions.

Every year, four (4) outstanding applicants are selected to receive a scholarship award of $500 from the scholarship fund to offset the costs of applying to professional and graduate schools.  Awardees can use the funds for expenses including but limited to:

  • Application fees
  • Admission test preparation courses (e.g. MCAT, DAT)
  • Travel expenses for interviews
  • Examination fees

To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be an alum of the program (SHPEP, SMDEP, SMEP, or MMEP) and in the process of applying to a health professions school.

Applicants will be evaluated based on demonstrated commitment to eliminating health disparities, past achievements, and financial need. Applicants are encouraged to share highlights from their personal and academic journey, and how winning the scholarship will assist them in achieving their education and career goals.

Lastly, your support of this scholarship fund plays a vital role in providing financial assistance to those who have demonstrated financial need, and it is genuinely appreciated. Every dollar given is another door of opportunity opened for future healthcare professionals.
